This European Standard specifiesrequirements for the design, testing, performance and equipping of road ambulances used for the transport and care of patients. This standard is applicable to road ambulances capable of transporting at least one person on a stretcher. These road ambulances are categorized into three different types:
Type A: Patient Transport ambulance, Type B: Emergency ambulance, Type C: Mobile Intensive care unit
- PATIENT TRANSPORT AMBULANCE (Type A)
These are road ambulance designed and equipped for the transport of patients who are not expected to become emergency patients. Two types of patient transport ambulances exist:
Type A1: Suitable of transport of a single patient
Type A2: Suitable of transport of one or more patient(s) (either on stretchers or chairs)
- EMERGENCY AMBULANCES (Type B)
These are road ambulances designed and equipped for the transport, basic treatment and monitoring of patients.
MOBILE INTENSIVE CARE UNIT (Type C)
These ambulances are designed for the transport, advanced treatment and monitoring of patients. Type C is modeled to have adequate space to accommodate hospital equipment such as ventilators etc…
These Standardised Ambulances undergo rigorous static and dynamic tests in compliance with EN 1789 clauses 4.5.9 and 5.3 by a notified body.
